The reviewer found the books to be a compelling exploration of mother-daughter relationships across generations, highlighting themes of love, sacrifice, and forgiveness. They particularly appreciated the character development and emotional depth, though some plot elements felt unrealistic and dragged.

The reviewer enjoyed the intricate portrayal of strained mother-daughter relationships in 'Her Mother’s Hope' and 'Her Daughter’s Dream'. The books span five generations, starting with Marta and her daughter Hildemara, and continue through Hildemara's children, Carolyn and Dawn. The reviewer appreciated the themes of love, sacrifice, and forgiveness, as well as the historical context provided by the World Wars and other significant events. They particularly loved the character of Mitch, Carolyn's husband, who showed unwavering love despite challenging circumstances. However, some plot elements, such as Dawn's long drive and Carolyn's pregnancy complications, felt unrealistic and dragged the story. Overall, the reviewer found the books emotionally engaging and confirmed their belief in Francine Rivers' skill as a writer, especially in the realm of Christian novels.

Quick quotes

The book is about these wonderful women, their relationships with each other and their husbands and children (both strong and strained.

I always fall in love with the male characters Francine Rivers’ develops but my favourite in this series is Carolyn’s husband, Mitch.

Nonetheless, Martha’s Legacy are definitely must-reads.

insightful 4.50

Her Mother’s Hope follows Marta's journey from Switzerland to California, highlighting her struggles and resilience. The story also explores the complex relationship between Marta and her daughter Hildemara, emphasizing the importance of communication and understanding in family dynamics.

Her Mother’s Hope is a compelling narrative that traces Marta's life from her childhood in Switzerland to her later years in California. The story is not just about Marta's journey but also about her daughter Hildemara, who represents the opposite of her mother in many ways. Marta's efforts to push Hildemara in directions she believes are best often lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. The book beautifully captures the cycle of misunderstanding and the importance of open communication in family relationships. It made me reflect on the need to ensure that loved ones know they are cared for, despite any differences or misunderstandings. The author, Francine Rivers, does an excellent job of making readers empathize with both mother and daughter, highlighting their mutual love and the challenges they face in expressing it.

Quick quotes

Marta starts off living in Switzerland with her mother father and younger sister and then moves from there to England via france and then Canada for a few years before finally settling with the entire family she has by then in California. Her life is far from easy and it takes the girl/woman a lot of guts to do many of the things she eventually does.

What I did find gave it a fresh viewpoint though was how Francine Rivers managed to make you relate to not just the mother or the daughter but to both.

I got to the end of the book and I just wanted to sit them both down and make them talk about their lives to each other, so both would understand that the other loved them, despite not always showing it in the right way.
