intriguing 4.50

Strange Houses by Uketsu is a unique and clever book that uses floor plans to tell a horrifying story, blending elements of mystery and Japanese culture. The unreliable narrator and intricate plot make it a compelling read that leaves readers questioning what is real.

Strange Houses by Uketsu is a standout book that uses the unconventional approach of floor plans to weave a tale of horror and mystery. The story is told through the lens of an enigmatic author who interviews characters, adding layers of intrigue and unreliability. The blend of Japanese culture and speculative theories makes the book a unique and unsettling experience. The floor plans themselves are a clever device, initially appearing normal but revealing disturbing details as the story progresses. The interplay between the author and the architect Kurihara adds depth, making readers question the motives and reliability of both characters. This book is a rare find that leaves a lasting impression and a desire to revisit it for deeper understanding.

There are no spoilers in the below review!

One of the most unique and clever books I’ve read in quite some time is Japanese author, Uketsu’s 2021 book, _Strange Houses_ (Jim Rion’s English translation came out in 2025).

Uketsu’s book achieved two rare feats for me: a.) making me want to present this review to you as spoiler-free as possible, so you can enjoy the experience; and b.) re-read it so I can understand it anew and find those aforementioned omissions.
